Pediatrics By the Sea is the Georgia Chapter – American Academy of Pediatrics’ annual summer CME meeting. This meeting has been held each year in the spring for over 40 years and receives statewide and national attendance. The meeting is intended to provide pediatricians and other child health professionals with varied health topics designed to address current issues and topics in primary care pediatrics. The conference is open to pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric nurses and other child health care and clinical professionals. The program agenda will be available on the registration website once registration opens.

Accommodations & Room Block Update:

Due to high demand, the room block at the Ritz-Carlton is currently full. However, we are working closely with the hotel to monitor availability, and we encourage confirmed attendees and exhibitors to join the waitlist as soon as possible.

Should any rooms become available at the Ritz-Carlton, upon receiving your registration confirmation, please contact the hotel directly at: Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island Reservations: (904) 277-1100

The waitlist operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning only registered attendees and exhibitors who sign up early will have priority if additional rooms become available.

Important Waitlist Policy

  • Only confirmed attendees and exhibitors will be eligible to receive a room reservation. If you have not yet registered for Pediatrics by the Sea as an attendee or exhibitor, and you contact the Ritz-Carlton to be added to the waitlist, your request for a room will be placed on hold until your registration is completed.
  • To ensure that all attendees have the opportunity to secure a room, each individual on the waitlist will only be able to reserve one room at this time. If you are requesting two or more rooms, only one room will be approved initially, and your request for additional rooms will be placed at the bottom of the waitlist.

An alternative accommodations guide with nearby hotels is available, though no room blocks have been reserved at these establishments.

The Role of Obesity Medications in the Pediatric Population

12:00 – 1:30pm

Overview:

We are in a new era in which we are understanding obesity as a complex disease process and not simply a result of lifestyle choices. In this era, the AAP has produced recent clinical practice guidelines which support the use of pharmacotherapy as an adjunct to lifestyle interventions to treat obesity and weight-related comorbidities in kids and teens. We now have access to highly effective obesity medications which bridge the gap between lifestyle interventions at one end of the spectrum and bariatric surgery at the other. This presentation is an opportunity to discuss the why and how of medication use for pediatric patients with obesity and to acknowledge challenges and opportunities for obesity care going forward.

Speaker:

Jessica Reilly, MD, FAAP, DABOM, Medical Director,

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Strong4Life Clinic and Bariatric Program

Objective:

  • Briefly review the AAP Guidelines on Treatment of Obesity in Children & Adolescents
  • Review currently available options for obesity medications including both FDA-approved and off-label options
  • Discuss general principles in the clinical approach to choosing to apply pharmacotherapy including considerations for nutritional status, appetite, disordered eating tendencies, and medical comorbidities.
