Welcome to the “dog days of August”! Turns out this phrase has nothing to do with our four-legged friends. The phrase’s origin is this: in late July when the constellation Sirus appears in the sky, just before the sun, it marks the beginning of the hottest days of the year. The Romans called this “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star” as Sirus was often referred to as the dog star. Eventually, it was shortened to “dog days of August.” So, with that little factoid……we hope all our members have enjoyed some good R & R time and managed to stay cool and healthy this summer.
This month we have two great programs for our members and their staff: on August 20th, we’ll have a webinar on RSV Immunization: Preparing for the New Season, featuring Christina Rostad, MD, chair of our Chapter ID Committee. This will be 12:30-1:30pm. Register for this event by clicking here. And on the following Saturday, August 24, from 9am – 2pm EDT, we’ll host the 2nd Annual Georgia Firearm Injury Prevention Symposium. Click here to register for it. CME is available for both events.
Once into September, we’ll showcase the pediatric nurses, medical assistants, and other clinical staff, together with pediatric practice managers, in the Fall Conference of the Ga. Pediatric Nurses Association and the Ga. Pediatric Practice Managers Association. That will be Friday, September 20 at the Cobb Energy Centre, Atlanta. Topics will include: Cybersecurity update, RSV immunization & Nirsevimab, Talking about Suicide in our patients, enhancing access to WIC, Eating disorders, Work-life balance and more! Finally, looking into the Fall, the big event….Pediatrics on the Parkway will be held October 24-26, at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Judson Miller, MD, Emory University is this year’s program chair. Pre-conference seminars on Coding & Practice Management, Pediatric Nutrition, Developmental Pediatrics, and Hospital Medicine are on tap for Thursday. National faculty include: Richard Lander, MD, New Jersey (coding) Robert Voigt, MD, New Orleans (developmental peds); Scott James, MD, Birmingham (ID); and Lucien Gonzalez, MD, Chapel Hill, NC, (Substance abuse) and a host of Georgia experts! And then on that Saturday night we’ll have our big celebration with a Gala marking the 70th anniversary of the Georgia Chapter. This will be held at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel, which adjoins the Cobb Galleria Centre. Be sure and mark your calendar now for that one.
